End of Summer: Bears and Salmon

Our first summer in Juneau was great with a mix of sun and rain. Or a mix of sun and clouds as the Canadians would describe it. In August, we had a little over a week of Blue Sky and warm weather (high 60s to mid 70s). By then must of the red salmon had spawned and were now making great bear food. So, up at Steep Creek, near the Mendenhall Glacier, some black bears and some cubs were down there every day eating fish during the week of nice weather. The one day we did see them I did not have my camera but was able to spread the word to my co works, so many of them went down there and got pictures. It is amazing being in a place this close to nature. David and I like to hike down to the water fall by the glacier, but had to pick a new spot with the bear issue because of Alexander and Kuma. So instead took our walks down to the Mendenhall River trail and looped around Moose Lake. Oddly enough for those of you who do not know, there are hardly any moose in SE Alaska. After the endless days of rain, we would have to find other ways to hike down by the lake due to the trail being washed away.

Now that we are in fall, the temperatures have dropped and rarely go above 57F in Juneau. We had a first day of freezing temperatures last night. The last cruise ship left Juneau area tonight making downtown almost like a ghost town to next summer.
